Las Delicias Natural Java is produced by the Mierisch family and is one of the prettiest most well-balanced coffees we have had all year. Since 2016 the Las Delicias farm was run by Eleane Mierisch, but unfortunately we lost her in 2023. Eleane was very dear friend to us and one of the leading lights in coffee processing in Nicaragua and Honduras, a field traditionally dominated by men. We are so happy to have this coffee from Las Delicias, the first farm belonging to entirely to Eleane, to remind us of her pioneering spirit and warm personality.
Thankfully, this Las Delicias was not a one woman show, but a team approach, as Eleane enlisted the entire Mierisch family, who consist of three generations, to help. Today Dr Erwin Mierisch, his son Erwin and his grand son Erwin Jr carry on with a focus on perfecting the Java varietal at this farm. Their skill and expertise is evident in the delicate and bright profile of their Javas (as well as numerous times they've won Nicaragua's "Cup of Excellence"), which gets more and more intense notes of citric and apricot every year. And with natural processing, as in this case, it has even more passion fruit and fudge. We love this coffee so much that we even used it as the mother plant to the Java we are buying from La Linda in Bolivia!
The Mierisch family are also very active in developing numerous social and environmental projects to improve the quality of life for the hundreds of workers they employ, local community and ecosystem. If any one producer could single handedly demonstrate just how significantly coffee can positively impact society it'd have to be them.
